The Magical Dvr System: Cable and Satellite Tv’s Ace in the Hole
The DVR (Digital Video Recorder) system is one of satellite TV and cable TVâs biggest advantages. Letâs face it, dozens of channels are all well and good but the idea of a DVR system is what sells many subscribers on upgrading their service. The power of todayâs digital video recorder calls to mind the heyday of the VCR (Video Cassette Recorder) system. When the VCR was first released, many sources in broadcasting panicked at the idea of the average home viewer having so much power. Now the home viewer could go out and buy his or her favorite movie, or even worse, videotape their favorite TV series and fast forward through the commercials. Well, the TV industry survived somehow and now the next big thing has arrived: the digitally based DVR system, available with satellite TV and cable TV.
The next generation DVR is much more powerful than the VCR of old. What is the DVR system, how does it work and why is it the best thing sinceâ¦well, the VCR? A DVR system does not record or play content with a tape. The device is a hard drive that has been surrounded by a casing that looks sort of like a cable box. The television signal connects to the DVRâs built-in tuner by way of an antenna, cable plug or satellite cable.
What are the advantages of DVR when compared to VCR? A DVR digitally records all programs and does not require tape. Remember how much frustration you felt back in the 1990s when you tried to tape NYPD Blue and Seinfeld and you either couldnât find a blank tape or all the tapes were filled with un-erasable reruns of ER? The idea of a DVR is that you can program your DVR system to record a full program by just clicking on the name of the program on the schedule.Â
You can search by an actorâs name or a series name. You can even program your DVR to record a program every day or just a few times a year. Another tremendous advantage of DVR is the ability a viewer has to program his system remotely. You can access your home network online and program your DVR from halfway across the country! Imagine being able to âphone inâ your DVR and program a recording from your car phone or from a cell phone.
Another benefit to the DVR system is the power you have over playback. When you record a show on your old VCR you have to wait until the system starts, finishes and is ready for rewinding. With a DVR, there is no tapeâtherefore, you can rewind or pause at anytime during the broadcast. Does this mean that you can pause live television broadcasts? Yes, and this is one of the most amazing and popular features new users look for. You can stop the picture from playing or rewind the action even while you continue to record the program. Youâre not actually pausing live TV (that would be omnipotence) but you do get some very handy features nonetheless.
For more on the DVR system, contact your local cable company or satellite TV company and ask for details.

High Life is a film based on the stage play by Lee MacDougall, written by Lee MacDougall and directed by Gary Yates. [1] Starring Timothy Olyphant, Stephen Eric McIntyre, Joe Anderson and Rossif Sutherland, High Life is a comedic heist movie from the flip-side of the 80âs consumer dream.
Plot
Set in 1983, just after the birth of the Automated Teller Machine, High Life is a story of kinship, loyalty, and honour amongst thieves. In a busy downtown hospital, a visit from his former socio-pathic cellmate Bug (Stephen Eric McIntyre) has just gotten Dick (Timothy Olyphant) fired from his job as a hospital janitor. Unemployed and in need of fast cash Dick gets the idea to rob one of the dayâs brand new ATM’s, to âbuy a little self-respectâ, announces Dick to Bug and the team. Enter the charismatic, criminally-minded Donnie, (Joe Anderson) and the front-man, the sexy, sleepy-eyed charmer Billy, (Rossif Sutherland) and all of the pieces are in place. [3] âItâs a precision job,â says Dick the night before the heist: âNo violence.â You think?
Naturally things donât go according to plan and the unfolding catalogue of disasters that confronts Dick is enough to test any friendâs loyalties as the lovable losers bungle their way toward a pipe-dream of quick riches. Alternately tragic and hysterical, High Lifeâs perfect plan ends up anything but when one of the bankâs employees double-crosses them all. Set against the nostalgic back-beat of Three Dog Night, Creedence Clearwater Revival and a raft of April Wine[4], High Lifeâs highwire tension unfolds with calamitous results.

How To Connect Direct TV PC HD DVR Guide
The first geosynchronous communication satellite, Syncom 2, was launched in 1963. It has become very popular at the end of the first decade of the 21st century due to services such as the BBC iPlayer (in and restrained to the United Kingdom) and Hulu (constricted to the United States); go to List of Internet television providers. Concept Internet television (otherwise known as Internet TV, Catch-up TV or Online TV) is television service distributed via the Internet.

Internet television allows viewers to choose the show or the TV channel they want to watch from a library of shows or from a channel directory. The first satellite television signal was relayed from Europe to the Telstar satellite over North America in 1962. The Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) consortium of industry companies (such as SES Astra, Humax, Philips, and ANT Software)is currently promoting and establishing an open European standard (called HbbTV) for hybrid set-top boxes for the reception of broadcast and broadband digital TV and multimedia applications with a single user interface. The first domestic North American satellite to carry television was Canada’s geostationary Anik 1, which was launched in 1972. In varied areas of the world it provides a wide range of channels and services, often to areas that are not serviced by terrestrial or cable providers. History The world’s first commercial communication satellite, called Intelsat I (nicknamed Early Bird), was launched into synchronous orbit on April 6, 1965. ATS-6, the world’s first experimental educational and Direct Broadcast Satellite, was launched in 1974. Satellite television is television delivered by the process of communications satellite and received by a satellite dish and set-top box.
Satellites used for television signals are generally in either naturally highly elliptical (with inclination of +/-63.4 degrees and orbital period of about 12 hours, also known as Molniya orbit) or geostationary orbit 37,000 km (22,300 miles) above the earth’s equator. Satellite television, like other communications relayed by satellite, starts with a transmitting antenna located at an uplink facility. The first Soviet geostationary satellite to carry Direct-To-Home television, called Ekran, was launched in 1976. Technology The uplink dish is pointed toward a specific satellite and the uplinked signals are transmitted within a specific frequency range, so as to be received by one of the transponders tuned to that frequency range aboard that satellite. Uplink satellite dishes are very large, as much as 9 to 12 meters (30 to 40 feet) in diameter.
The leg of the signal path from the satellite to the receiving Earth station is called the downlink. C-band transmission is susceptible to terrestrial interference while Ku-band transmission is affected by rain (as water is an excellent absorber of microwaves at this particular frequency). A significant satellite has up to 32 transponders for Ku-band and up to 24 for a C-band only satellite, or more for hybrid satellites. The downlinked satellite signal, quite weak after traveling the great distance (visit inverse-square law), is collected by a parabolic receiving dish, which reflects the weak signal to the dish’s focal point. Prototypal transponders each have a bandwidth between 27 MHz and 50 MHz.
This feedhorn is essentially the flared front-end of a section of waveguide that gathers the signals at or near the focal point and ‘conducts’ them to a probe or pickup connected to a low-noise block downconverter or LNB. The evolution of LNBs was one of necessity and invention. The LNB amplifies the relatively weak signals, filters the block of frequencies in which the satellite TV signals are transmitted, and converts the block of frequencies to a lower frequency range in the L-band range. The advantages of using an LNB are that cheaper cable could be used to connect the indoor receiver with the satellite TV dish and LNB, and that the technology for handling the signal at L-Band and UHF was far cheaper than that for handling the signal at C-Band frequencies. Direct broadcast satellite dishes are fitted with an LNBF, which integrates the feedhorn with the LNB.
You also can’t watch two separate programs on two TVs hooked up to the same receiver. News Corporation currently holds a 38% stake, which it is in the process of selling to Liberty Media. The leading satellite television broadcaster in the United Kingdom is a subscription based service named Sky Digital, marketed by British Sky Broadcasting. The provider may occasionally send signals that disrupt illegal de-scramblers, as an electronic counter measure (ECM) against illegal users. In 1996, EchoStar’s Dish Network went online in the United States and has gone on to similar success as DirecTV’s primary competitor. How to Start your Own Baby Food Business Part #6: Manufacturing Vs. Catering
Handmade Baby Food vs. Commercially Produced, Store Bought Baby Food
Food from your baby food catering business will be differentiated from commercial, factory produced baby food in the following ways:
People & Production
Your baby food is made-by-hand by individuals who are committed to the quality of the baby food. At least one certified chef is on duty at all times supervising the process and ensuring that ingredient and cooking standards are met. The food is made in a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen like the ones used by top chefs.
Commercial baby food is produced in mass in a factory or co-packing facility. More often than not, baby food is not the only food product produced in the facility. Typically baby food is made by workers that do not have culinary training and do not have a passion or commitment to high quality baby food.
Hand Selection of Ingredients
Each and every ingredient in your baby food, down to the smallest berry, is hand selected to ensure that it is of the highest quality and to make sure that it is completely ripe.
Commercial baby food is made from massive deliveries of bulk produce that arrive on loading docks. Food quickly passes by workers on conveyer beltsthere is little time for manual inspection.
Source & Quality
The majority of the ingredients in your baby food are locally grown. They are picked only when fully ripe and go from the field to our kitchen within a matter of days, sometimes hours.
Produce used to make commercial baby food comes from multiple sources and multiple countries. It is often picked before fully ripened, to withstand the long transport from the field to the factory. Sometimes produce becomes over-ripe or rotten as it sits on trucks, in warehouses, or on loading docks for days or weeks.
Organic
You use only 100% organic ingredients that are never stored near other non-organic ingredients or produced alongside non-organic foods.
Even foods that are made with organic ingredients can be contaminated with pesticides when they are transported or stored with or near non-organic ingredients or produced in a facility that also makes non-organic food products. Commercial baby food is often made in large factories or by co-packers that also produce non-organic foods.
Washing
All of produce used in the production of your baby food is individually washed or scrubbed by hand.
In commercial baby food factories, produce is either rinsed as it passes under a sprayer on a conveyer belt or it may be allowed to sit in a vat of water to be cleaned. Often the process involves cleaning agents or chemicals.
Preparation
All the produce used in the production of your baby food is peeled, cored, or diced by hand. This provides a second inspection of the ingredient before cooking.
Produce used to make commercial baby food is peeled, processed, and cut by machines in large batches. Seeds, stems, rotten spots, etc. can easily go over looked and may be included in the final product.
Cooking
The majority of your baby food made using produce that has been gently steamed to ensure that the vitamins and nutrients are not “cooked out” of the food. This process also helps the food to retain its natural color. Some foods are baked or roasted whole to ensure that the natural juices are retained.
Commercial baby food is boiled in large vats or cooked quickly in giant, super heated ovens. Both processes are designed to cook the food as quickly as possible so large amounts can be produced at once. The food must be cooked at high enough temperatures to be sterilized in order for it to sit in a warehouse or on a store shelf for long periods of time. Essential nutrients and natural colors are lost. Vitamins and color must be added back into the food. This is accomplished using either synthetic materials or fruit/vegetable concentrates or dyes. Some food dyes are made using ground insects.
Processing
Your baby food is pureed in small batches which are weighed and measured by hand. Each batch is checked and rechecked to ensure a smooth or creamy texture.
Commercial baby food is ground in large, industrial vats. Sometimes tons of food is processed at once.
Texture
You add only a small amount of distilled water to your foodjust enough to allow for a smooth puree. Because we add such a small amount of water, there is no need to add thickening agents.
Large amounts of water are added to commercial baby food to “thin it out”. This allows the company to get more baby food out of each pound of produce (water is cheap) thus increasing company profits while nutritionally cheating babies. Thickening agents, such as starch, are then added (starch is cheap too). Thickening agents also “stabilize” factory-made foods by keeping the complex mixtures of oils, water, acids, and solids well mixed.
Quality Control
At every point in the cooking and pureeing process the temperature of the food is checked and rechecked to ensure that the correct temperature and consistency is being met. Temperature is monitored during the cooking process to make certain that vital vitamins and minerals are not “cooked out”, and as food is cooled to avoid pathogen growth.
Most of the production is often monitored by computers rather than humans.
Packaging
Your baby food is packaged by a person, giving it one final quality check.
Commercial baby food is packaged by big machines that squirt food into jars or containers with no one overseeing the process.
Freshness, No preservatives
Your stores/kitchen/etc.make fresh baby food daily. You only make enough food to fulfill the needs of for the current week. Your baby food is sold or delivered to customers within 24 to 48 hours of being made. There is no need to add preservatives and no food is wasted.
Commercial baby food is made in mass. Tens of thousands of “units” of baby food are produced each day. Commercial baby food can sit in a warehouse or on a store shelf for up to 2 years. The companies must add chemical or natural preservatives to keep the food from degrading. Even frozen baby food in the grocery store can sit in the freezer for months before it is sold.

What are the similarities and differences of Direct TV HD DVR compared to Tivo HD?
After moving into a new apartment complex, we are being forced to leave our current cable company and go with one the complex has a contract with – they use Dish DVR and we are not happy with it. Being Tivo customers for over 4 years, we are looking for something similar to Tivo. Direct TV seems to be the closest, but before we commit, we wanted to get some feedback.
