DVD Writers – The Tool To Backup Your Important Files

In the world of data storage DVDs, or Digital Versatile Discs or Digital Video Discs, hold a very important place. They are used for both video and data storage. The DVD has the same dimensions of a CD or compact disc its storage capacity is much higher than that of a CD. It can store up to six times more data than a CD can. This is the reason why DVDs are more popular today.

Just like CD writers one can find DVD writer also. A DVD writer is a DVD drive that records or writes DVD. Actually it burns movies or data to a blank DVD and in some cases it can also overwrite existing data on a previously filled up DVD. While a DVD-Rom only reads the discs, a DVD writer provides us with lots of benefits. With the help of DVD writers one can make one’s own movie videodiscs. A DVD writer can help in reducing cost. Let us get into an example to understand this. Instead of hiring any outside production company one can use this writer to distribute any kind of corporate video. This task can be done in an easy and very much cheaper way.

Internal and external types of DVD writers are available. External drives are good for non-technical purposes or for new users because its usage is less complicated. In fact this kind of writer is helpful to those who want to use the writer among multiple writers. But external writers are costly.

An internal DVD writer works within a single system and is much cheaper compared to an external DVD writer. Depending on the product and standard, the speed with which DVD writers write varies. One can find four different kinds of DVD speeds namely CAV, CLV, PCAV, and ZCLV. In CAV or constant angular velocity, the DVD is written at a constant increasing speed. In CLV or constant linear velocity, DVD is written in a constant speed. In zone constant linear velocity or ZCLV, various zones are divided and the speed is increased after each zone is written. While a DVD is being written the speed increases first and after this the speed will not increase. This is what happens when PCAV or partial constant angular velocity takes place. The average speed to write any type of media is presently 16xs while the average speed for rewrite is 4x.

A DVD writer uses various kinds of interfaces like SCSI, IDE FireWire and USB. An internal DVD writer generally supports IDE interface compatibility while external products may require some other kind of interface. External models usually use Firewire. Apple developed this interface. But nowadays more and more DVD writers use USB 2.0 that offer speeds up to 480Mbps.

In order to install a DVD writer some minimum facilities are required. The performance of DVD writers varies or depends solely on the amount of available hard disk space, memory and the speed of the processor. For example, during the burning of 4.7GB of data, one would require that much of space on the hard drive. While with DVD-RAM writers one would need only that much of space as required for operating the software. The minimum required configuration that one requires for a computer is 500MHz CPU and 128 RAM. And in the case of operating system, Windows 2000 is preferable as a base.
