if you have DirecTV, read this:
DirecTV’s DVR can only record two shows at the same time if there are two cables running from the dish to the receiver. you also may have an older dvr box that can really only record ONE show at a time. the claim that you can watch one thing and record another often refers to watching already recorded shows (accessing recorded shows WHILE the dvr records a live channel).
if you have Dish Network, read this:
Dish Network’s DVRs are built to work two tvs at the same time. this is called a dual tuner. if your dvr’s model number is 522 or above, then you have a dual tuner. if your dvr is only hooked up to one tv instead of two, you can put the receiver in SINGLE mode, allowing you to record two shows at the same time.
without knowing exactly the setup you have (service, receiver model and type, etc.), this is about as much as i can help.

you need two SAT-IN cables coming in to your box. check on the back of the box.
if there are two plugged in (SAT-IN1 SAT-IN2) then make sure they are screwed in tightly.
if not, you’ll need another cable ran from your dish to the dvr.
they should have done this to begin with.
call customer service and if they say that you’ll have to pay an additional charge, let them know that you were told to begin with that you would be able to watch/record at the same time.
    hope this helps!!

    What DVR are you using?
If it uses CableCards to function you might need to check which type of card you have.
    3 types
    Single tuner
    Dual tuner
Multi-tuner (HD) – This is Single tuner in HD mode and Dual tuner in SD mode
If it is a satellite DVR then you must have 2 satellite cables connected to the DVR. Each cable connects to a different internal tuner.
