How much will it cost to repair a discoloration on an LCD projector?
We recently purchased a used projector with a discoloration, and need to get it fixed. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this. I believe it is probably the LCD panel.
The lamp has been used 475 hours out of 3000, I don’t believe it is the bulb. The discoloration is a large defined blotch. It shows up as green on the screen which leads me to believe it is the red lcd panel that has been damaged.

It’s probably just that the projector bulb has reached the end of it’s useful life. They can get dim and give off discolored light before they completely burn out.
Your diagnosis is probably correct … it’s an LCD panel issue (not the bulb). No way to say what it will cost to fix, but i’t likely going to be expensive since it involves replacing a major part of the projector. I suggest contacting the manufacturer to find an authorized service centre to get an estimate.
Unfortunately, with the rapid drop in projector costs and the simultaneous increase in performance over the last few years you will probably find it’s not cost-effective to repair the projector if it’s more than a few years old.
It’s not the projection bulb that causes the discoloration; it the actual LCD panel itself that’s discoloring due to the aging of the color mirror itself. You will need to replace the complete color engine itself which is a costly proposition. Your best bet is to look for another more recent LCD replacement projector and make sure that the mirror panel is made of inorganic material; not organic material which is often found in older model LCD projetors.
Good luck!
