Several people have told me that I should consider majoring in architecture in college. Most require a portfolio, but I don’t really know how to go about building one. I have some pieces from school art class, but not much on my own or architecture related. What should I include? What am I trying to prove with it?

I am currently a physics major in my second year of college and I only recently discovered that I also have a strong interest in architecture. Is there some sort of professional career in the architecture field (maybe structural planning or something?) that will allow me to synthesize my love of physics and eventual physics degree with my newfound appreciation of architecture?

When dealing with examples of ideology and iconography, is it categorically correct to place architecture in the same realm as art? Art, as a modifier of a cultural world view, helps to articulate the status quo in a given culture at a specific point in time. Do you find the argument that architecture expresses the beliefs, desires, or interests of the most elite (because they have the power to influence architecture) to be sufficient reason to examine architecture as art?

I am just wondering because I am just starting my first semester as a sophomore and I am seriously thinking about going for an architecture degree. I have heard from numerous people that it is really hard to get an architecture degree but I really haven’t had a good explanation as to why. If I could have someone who knows a lot about it architecture and the process through college I would be very thankful. Thanks in advance.
