What Would Pink Floyd Have Been Like If Syd Barrett Stayed With Them?
If he wouldent have had that drug induced breakdown I think pink floyd would have been a lot different. I sometimes think he would have got a psychotic illness either way. I just think all the acid was a trigger for the onset of the crazy symptoms which forced him to withdraw and freak. What does everyone else think? By the way The piper at the gates of dawn is the best cd ever, and the madcap laughs by syd barrett.

I think it’s become obvious that he was becoming mentally ill anyway – the LSD exacerbated it. Even without the on-tour breakdown, I think he wouldn’t have lasted much longer in Pink Floyd – and maybe they’d have ceased to exist when he quit.
Musically I think we would have gotten a more musicianly recording of the Madcap Laughs material (and of course the Vegetable Man/Scream Thy Last Scream single actually being released) before the split.
For some reason, it made me laugh that this was in Mental Health. =D
I don’t think he would have lasted in Floyd. Their music is extremely organized and intelligent and that was not the direction he was headed.
no matter what there would still be the greatest band ever
Pink Floyd was never a super group when Syd was a member. They were extremly psychedelic rock and experimental. Their sales were very modest indeed and they had never hit it big in the US (during any of the early years). Had the band continue with Syd and Gilmour wouldn’t have joined or become very involved like he did, the band could have ended up very differently. However, Roger Waters may have eventually dominated the band anyway, and if Gimour would have made it in, I think Syd would have been pushed out. Nobody ever expected what was going to happen when they released Dark Side Of The Moon. I doubt anyone would have considered that effort even possible by artists in the band. It was as much of a revelation as when Fleetwood Mac evolved from a little known blues band to supergroup overnight with two new members (Buckingham Nicks) from the US (That Mick Fleetwood brought in to the fold). Pink Floyd went from a 60’s psyocdelic band to elaborate head music and ultimate space rock band overnight with the classic Dark Side Of The Moon. What was even more surprising is they followed it up with several more legendary albums (with Roger Waters as the architect of the band). Gilmours voice and guitar was the OTHER trademark sound throughout Pink Floyd. I can’t see Syd Barrett being a part of this evolution. I dont think his sound was commercial (for mega sales or popularity). After Pink Floyd became popular, people started to appreciate him and his early contributions because of the roots he helped to create in the band and his influence. Even though their sound was revolutioned later, he still had an influence over the bands evolution. His input was featured on the bands Echoes Anthology The Best Of Pink Floyd. The psychedelic element of the band was preserved with the space rock sounds, synthesizers, guitar solos, and all the sarcasm, insanity, and cynical story lines written by Waters.
