Who was the idiot who thought that Eric Clapton was a better guitar player than Mark Knofler?

Listen to the songs, compare the music…Mark Knofler isn’t as well known as Eric Clapton but is a universe away from Eric Clapton as far as guitar playing is concerned. I wonder if that same person has ever heard of Danny Gatton?

    Nope

Eric Clapton is a great guitarist. I was listening to Derek and the Dominos (w/ Clapton) “Bell Bottom Blues” earlier.

WTF is Mark Knofler? And he’s probably better than Jimmy Page and Angus Young, as well? I don’t think so.

I enjoy Eric Clapton’s music, I grew up listening to him, each to their own.

Eric Clapton is much more diverse and is more talented in my opinion. Mark Knopfler is pretty legendary too though, don’t get me wrong. Dire Straits is one of my favorite bands.

Dude that is totally outrageous. Me and a few mates are just heading out to burn down things and beat people up. We were going to do it anyway but now we have a reason.

It’s a common misconception that people are “better” then another.

The truth is: that past a certain level of competence – a better performance depends on the mood – the muse, who’s running the Engineering, the style, speed, feel of the part being played.

I personally think that CLAPTON kicks Knofler’s azzno – but… that’s because I’m much more attuned (no pun intended) to the Blues/Jazz thing – over the “rock” thing.

Sometimes I have a guitarist in my studio who can not play “STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN” (hint… everyone can play Stairway To Heaven) – but can do a bluegrass lead like you would not believe.

Other times I’ll have really good guitarist who can’t play a LICK unless it’s charted for them… and still others who can’t read a chart at all.

This concept of “better” in my mind is too subjective to be “real”.

They’re both equally talented, dude. Relax before you pop a vein over something that isn’t important.

Not me dude, I have been a Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler fan for many many years.

but I have also been a Clapton fan.

I prefer Knopfler’s style but I wouldnt say he is better, just a different style of playing.

I like Mark’s sound alot better than Clapton. I’m a big guitar fanatic but I’ve never liked anything Clapton did (tears in heaven wasn’t bad tho). And Layla? What’s up with the end of that song?….lame.

I can see your point. Both Knoffler and Gatton play with what’s known as “hybrid picking.” Basically using the pick for downstrokes while (usually) the second and third fingers pull up on the higher strings…great technique.

Check out the Hellecasters for some of the finest guitar work on the planet right now.

As far as Clapton…he’s mainly a pick guy, so the comparisons are tough because the styles are different. However, Clapton has a vast library of impressive playing through the years, and although Knoffler is great, he hasn’t begun to “pay his dues” as much as Clapton has.

I have alot of Gatton music, including his instructional videos…sometimes Gatton is too busy, but perhaps he was trying to get as many notes in as possible in his too short life.

Eric gives his notes a bit more room to breath.
